If you would like to improve your skid control skills and feel more in control in difficult driving conditions, the skills you will learn on this skid pan course will be ideal for you.
An Unrivalled Level of Training
The courses takes place on our unique clean water skid pan area using unmodified cars and motorsport instructors. This level of equipment and training is vitally important as learning the wrong skills can actually make a driver more dangerous than no training at all!
A Clean Water Skid Pan
Our skid pan is a large area of smooth concrete which is constantly sprayed with clear water. To emulate real skid situations our skid cars are fitted with special low grip tyres. This unique method of skid creation is the most realistic available, and allows participants to learn skid control in total safety at speeds of up to 40mph.
The Correct Skid Cars
It's important that the skid cars used for the training are as close to standard road vehicles as possible. This will allow participants to acquire a ‘feel' for the car when it's skidding and therefore develop the skid avoidance and recovery reactions. For this reason all our skid cars are completely unmodified apart from the fitment of low grip tyres to create slippery road conditions.
Course Format
First there is a short presentation from your instructor on the theory of skid control. He will explain why drivers often lose control when the roads are slippery and explain the correct techniques to regain control of your vehicle.
Session 1 - A Demonstration of Skid Control Skills
Your instructor will demonstrate controlling the vehicle in various skid scenarios and explain how he is making it look so easy!
Session 2 - Skid Pan Training
Then it's your turn to drive our skid pan car with your instructor in the passenger seat giving you advice and encouragement. On the session you will experience spinning the car and learn the basic skid recovery skills. You will also learn how to avoid getting into a skid when you're faced with slippery road conditions.
Session 3 - ABS Demonstration
Anti Lock Brakes are an amazing safety device in trained hands and your instructor will first demonstrate the control it gives the driver in an emergency!
Session 4 - ABS Training
Then its your turn, for this part of the training session we set up an avoidance exercise on our motorway simulation area. You will need to avoid a collision with standing traffic (Traffic cones actually, so no need to worry!) and brake to a stop from 60mph whilst changing lanes!
Session 5 - Skid Pan Training
Back on the skid pan area again but this time you will feel more confident and can really hone your skills.
Skid Pan Certificate
At the end of the course all participants receive a signed assessment certificate.
Course Duration
The half day course takes place in either the morning from 9am-12pm or in the afternoon from 1pm-4pm. There are free tea and coffee facilities available throughout the day and lunch is available to purchase for a reasonable price on site.
Venue
All the skid pan sessions take place at our skid control centre which is situated on the outskirts of York.
